The best counties for outdoor recreation combine comfortable temperatures, moderate rainfall, minimal extreme heat, and enough winter snow to support seasonal activities without making year-round outdoor life miserable. Whether you hike, bike, ski, camp, or fish, climate determines how many days per year you can comfortably pursue your passion.
We built an outdoor recreation climate index that rewards counties with four-season appeal — not too hot, not too cold, not too wet, and not completely snow-free.

Methodology
The outdoor recreation index weights four factors: temperature moderation (35% — proximity to 57°F annual average), precipitation balance (25% — proximity to 32 inches/year), low extreme heat (25% — fewer days above 90°F), and winter snow (15% — some snow for winter sports without excessive accumulation). All data comes from NOAA Climate Normals 1991-2020.
Data source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020. All figures represent 30-year averages and may differ from individual-year observations. Station-level data is aggregated to county level using spatial averaging.
